It is with great pleasure that I launch this Great Designers Series‘ post with Eero Saarinen, one the most influential architects of the XX century, and also of my favorite furniture designers.
Eero Saarinen was born in 1910, in Finland, son of the renowned Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen. Following his father’s path, Eero graduated in architecture 1934 at Yale University. In the next years, Saarinen completed many modernist architecture projects, like (i) the Gateway Arc, in St. Louis, (ii) the Miller House, in Columbus, Indiana, (iii) a neo-futuristic terminal in JFK Airport, in New York City.
Besides all the international acclaim in the buildings, Eero has immortalized himself in our homes with the amazing furniture line he designed for Knoll in the 1940’s and 1950’s, including the Pedestal Line (“Tulipe”), the Grasshopper and the Womb chairs.
Further the clean organic aesthetics, the one leg table and chair are made to last forever. The chair cushions can be easily removed to be cleaned or changed; I guess that’s the most amazing thing about design: being timeless.

Beijos.
